Setting earned value method with physical % complete in MS Project Pro

To use the earned value method in MS Project Pro, all resources must be of either work type or material type.

Stpes to set up earned value method in MS Project Pro:

  1. Set the field for the earned value method:
    1. Click the "File" item in the top menu.
    2. Click the "Options" item in the left menu.
    3. Click the "Advanced" item in the left menu of the "Project Options" window.
    4. Selec the "Physical % Complete" in the "Default task Earned Value method" field.
  2. Set the status date:
    1. Click the "Project" item in the top menu.
    2. Click the date in the "Status Date" field.
    3. Enter the end date of the implementation period in the "Select Date:" field.

  7. Add the "Earned Value Method" column and change the values (all values must be "Physical % Complete").

Using the earned value method with physical % complete in MS Project Pro

Steps to use the earned value method in MS Project Pro:

  1. Click the "View" item un the top menu.
  2. Click the "Tables" button in the "Data" block.
  3. Click the "More Tables..." item.
  4. Select the "Task" tub in the "Tables" field.
  5. Select one of the table: "Earned Value" or "Earned Value Cost Indicators" or "Earned Value Schedule Indicators".
  6. Click the "Apply" button.

Columns earned value tables:

  • Planned Value - PV (BCWS) - Baseline costs of tasks planned according to the baseline during the implementation period.
  • Earned Value - EV (BCWP) - Costs for tasks planned during the implementation period.
  • AC (ACWP) - Actual costs for tasks planned during the implementation period. To determine them, the value of the physical % completion of the task is used
  • SV - Deviation of base costs from planned costs for the implementation period (BCWS - BCWP). It shows the volume that was made during the period. 
  • CV - Deviation of base costs from actual costs for the implementation period (BCWS - ACWP). It shows how much the costs of tasks have changed over the period
  • SV% - The ratio of the schedule variance to the base costs for the implementation period (SV / BCWR).
  • CV% - The ratio of the cost variance to the base costs for the implementation period (CV / BCWR).
