Assigning the cost resource on the total summary task in MS Project Pro
You can't assigning cost resource to the project summary task. You need to add a new summary task "Project resources". And after that assigning the cost resource in this summary task.
We recommend using budgeted and fixed costs.
Steps to assigning the cost resource on the total summary task in MS Project Pro:
- Open the "Task Usage" view.
- Add a new task "Project Resources". (Read more "Add new tasks to the plan in MS Project Pro")
- Set all project tasks as subtasks of the "Project Resources" task.
- Assigne the cost resourse to the task "Project Resources". (Read more "Assigning resources in MS Project")
- Click the "View" item in the top menu.
- Open the cost table. Click the "Table" button and select the "Cost" item.
- Click the "Task Usage Format" item in the top menu.
- Click the "Add Deails" button.
- Show fields: "Budget Cost", "Baseline Cost", "Fixed Cost" and "Cost".
- Click the "Ok" button.
- If you have planned the fixed cost, save the baseline (Read more "Project baseline in MS Project Pro") and clear fixed cost.
- Enter the cost in the "Total Cost" field. You can get the cost value from the baseline cost.
- Click the "Vlew" item in the top menu.
- Set the time period in the field. "Timescale" in the "Zoom" block. We recommend choosing a month.
- Compare the three values budget (the "Budget Cost" field), baseline cost (the "Base. Cost" field) and cost (the "Cost" field) on the left part of the view. Adjust costs (the "Cost" field) as needed.

- Show fields: "Budget Cost", "Baseline Cost", "Fixed Cost" and "Cost".
- Click the "Ok" button.

- Enter the cost in the "Total Cost" field. You can get the cost value from the baseline cost.
- Decrease the cost value specified on the "Project Resources" task.
- Click the "Vlew" item in the top menu.
- Set the time period in the field. "Timescale" in the "Zoom" block. We recommend choosing a month.
- Compare the three values budget (the "Budget Cost" field), baseline cost (the "Base. Cost" field) and cost (the "Cost" field) on the left part of the view. Adjust costs (the "Cost" field) as needed.
