Adding a custom column to filter the tasks of the current month in MS Project Pro

Create a custom column to create a report and a filter for highlighting outstanding tasks of the current month.

Steps to add a custom column to filter the tasks of the current month in MS Project Pro:

  1. Click the "Project" item in the top menu.
  2. Click the "Custom Fields" button in the "Properties" block.
  3. Click the "Task" box in the "Field" block.
  4. Select the "Flag" in the "Type:" field.
  5. Select en empty field in the list.
  6. Click the "Rename..." button.
  7. Enter the field name in the "Rename Field" window. (For example "Current period")
  8. Click the "Formula ..." button in the "Custom attributes" block.
  9. Enter the formula: "IIf((Val(DatePart("yyyy";[Start])*100+DatePart("m";[Start]))>Val(DatePart("yyyy";Now())*100+DatePart("m";Now())));False;True)"
  10. Click the "Use formula" box in the "Calculation for task and group summary rows" block.
  11. Click the "Ok" buttom.

Create a filter to highlight outstanding tasks for the current month. And also filter out tasks with deviations by finish date and by cost.

  3. Open the "Filter" field in the "Data" block.
  4. Click the "More Filters ..." button.

  7. Click the "Show in menu" box.

  9. Set the "equal" in the "Test" field.
  10. Set the "Yes" in the "Value(s)" field.
  11. Add a new row below.
  12. Set a "And" in the "And/Or" field on the bottom field.

  15. Set the "does not equal" in the "Test" field.
  16. Set the "100%" in the "Value(s)" field.
  17. Add a new row below.
  18. Set a "Or" in the "And/Or" field.
  19. Select the "% product" in the "Field Name" column.
  20. Set the "does not equal" in the "Test" field.
  21. Set the "100" in the "Value(s)" field.
  22. Add a new row below.
  23. Set a "And" in the "And/Or" field on the bottom field.

  25. Select the "Finish Variance" in the "Field Name" column.
  26. Set the "equal" in the "Test" field.
  27. Set the "0" in the "Value(s)" field.
  28. Add a new row below.
  29. Set a "Or" in the "And/Or" field.
  30. Select the "Cost Variance" in the "Field Name" column.
  31. Set the "equal" in the "Test" field.
  32. Set the "0" in the "Value(s)" field.
  33. Click the "Ok" button.

Steps to add a table to a report on tasks for the current month in MS Project Pro:

  1. Click the "Report" item in the top menu.
  2. Create the report.
  3. Click the "Report Design" item in the top menu.
  4. Click the "Table" button in the "Insert" block.
  5. Click the "Table Desigen" item in the top menu.
  6. Click the "Table Date" button in the "Show/Hide" group.
  7. Select the "Task" in the "Field List" block.
  8. Click on the required fields in the "Select Field" box. Select fields: "Name", "Critical", "% Complete", "% product", "Cost Variance", "Finish Variance" and "Resource Names".
  9. Choose the "Current task" in the "Filter" field.
  10. Set the "All Subtasks" in the "Outline Level" field.
  11. Click the "Show Hierarchy" box.
