Variance control in MS Project Pro

You can control variance project for various parameters. The most common parameters: duration variance and cost variance.

Steps to add the custom column "Variance control" in MS Project Pro:

  1. Click the "Project" item in the top menu.
  2. Click the "Custom Fields" button in the "Properties" block.
  3. Choose the "Task" in the "Field" block.
  4. Select the "Number" in the "Type:" field.
  5. Select the empty field. 
  6. Click the "Rename ..." button.
  7. Enter the "Variance control" field in the "Rename Field" window.
  8. Click the "Formula ..." in the "Custom attributes" block. Enter the formula: "IIf(([Strateg] =Yes) And (([Duration Variance]>3*480) Or ([Cost Variance]>1000));1;0)"
  9. Click the "Use formula" box in the "Calculation for task and group summary rows" block .
  10. Click the "Ok" button in the "Custom Fields" window.

Variance control in MS Project Pro

Steps to add the graphical indicator in the custom column "Variance control" in MS Project Pro:

  1. Click the “Project” item in the top menu.
  2. Click the “Custom Field” button in the “Properties” block.
  3. Choose the “Variance control” field.
  4. Click the "Graphical indecators ..." button.
  5. Select rules:
    1. "Test for "Variance control": equals - "Value(s)": 0 - "Image": green.
    2. "Test for "Variance control": equals - "Value(s)": 1 - "Image": red.
  6. Set the other rules for the summary rows:
    1. Click the "Summary rows" box.
    2. You can use nonsummary rules, click the "Summary rows inherit criteria from nonsummary rows" box.
  7. Set the other rules for the project summary rows:
    1. Click the "Project summary" box.
    2. You can use nonsummary rules, click the "Project summary rows inherit criteria from summary rows" box.
  8. Click the “Ok” button in the "Graphical Indicators for "Variance control" window.
  9. Click the “Ok” button
