Variance control in MS Project Pro
You can control variance project for various parameters. The most common parameters: duration variance and cost variance.
Steps to add the custom column "Variance control" in MS Project Pro:
- Click the "Project" item in the top menu.
- Click the "Custom Fields" button in the "Properties" block.
- Choose the "Task" in the "Field" block.
- Select the "Number" in the "Type:" field.
- Select the empty field.
- Click the "Rename ..." button.
- Enter the "Variance control" field in the "Rename Field" window.
- Click the "Formula ..." in the "Custom attributes" block. Enter the formula: "IIf(([Strateg] =Yes) And (([Duration Variance]>3*480) Or ([Cost Variance]>1000));1;0)"
- Click the "Use formula" box in the "Calculation for task and group summary rows" block .
- Click the "Ok" button in the "Custom Fields" window.

Steps to add the graphical indicator in the custom column "Variance control" in MS Project Pro:
- Click the “Project” item in the top menu.
- Click the “Custom Field” button in the “Properties” block.
- Choose the “Variance control” field.
- Click the "Graphical indecators ..." button.
- Select rules:
- "Test for "Variance control": equals - "Value(s)": 0 - "Image": green.
- "Test for "Variance control": equals - "Value(s)": 1 - "Image": red.
- Set the other rules for the summary rows:
- Click the "Summary rows" box.
- You can use nonsummary rules, click the "Summary rows inherit criteria from nonsummary rows" box.
- Set the other rules for the project summary rows:
- Click the "Project summary" box.
- You can use nonsummary rules, click the "Project summary rows inherit criteria from summary rows" box.
- Click the “Ok” button in the "Graphical Indicators for "Variance control" window.
- Click the “Ok” button
