Task constraint types in MS Project Pro
You can set a time constraint for a task. In MS Project, a constraint is a condition that is imposed on the start or finish date of a task.
There are three types of constraint in MS Project:
1. Flexible constraints. Flexible constraint take into account the dependencies between tasks and do not tie a task to a specific date. Flexible constraints include:
- As Late As Possible. Task end date set as late as possible. The task end date is the same as the project end date if the task has no other restrictions.
- As Soon As Possible. Task start date set as soon as possible. The task start date is the same as the project start date if the task has no other restrictions. This takes into account links with other tasks. This constraint is used as the default for new task.
2. Semi-flexible constraints. Semi-flexible constraints use a specified date. You can set for task the earliest start or the oldest finish. Semi-flexible constraints include:
- Finish No Earlier Then. The task must end no earlier than the constraint date.
- Finish No Later Then. The task must end no later than the constraint date.
- Start No Earlier Than. The task must start no earlier than the constraint date.
- Start No Later Then. The task must start no later than the constraint date.
3. Inflexible constraints.
- Must Finish On. The task must finish on the constraint date.
- Must Start On. The task must start on the constraint date.
